SOS and Important Public Messages
SOS
Be prepared to answer the SOS operator’s questions about the incident, the telephone number you are calling from and place of assistance.
Give the SOS operator as much information as possible. Should you obtain additional information before the emergency services arrive at the place of incident, please call 112 again and give details of such information. The questions asked by the SOS operator will not delay the emergency services as the alarm call is taken over and concurrently dealt with by another operator.
SOS-Alarm is commissioned by the State to operate the emergency number 112. Sweden has 20 emergency service centres. The emergency service centre in Uppsala County is together with Uppsala Fire Prevention Office located at Viktoria.
Critical Public Message
In case of a serious incident jeopardising the safety of the general public or when critical information to the public is essential, a special warning system is used: Critical Public Messages.
The alarm signals are each seven seconds long with intervals of fourteen seconds. The alarm signal indicates: Stay indoors, shut doors and windows, turn off any air-conditioning and turn on the radio to listen to programmes P4 and P3 for further information.
The sirens are tested at 3 p.m. on the first ordinary Monday of March, June, September and December. Following an incident, an all-clear signal of 30 seconds may sound.
There are 80 sirens within the densely populated areas of Uppsala. Uppsala Fire Prevention Office (Brandförsvaret) by order of the Rescue Controller operates these from the Emergency Service Centre at Viktoria (Brandstationen Viktoria).
The sirens are maintained by the Uppsala Fire Prevention Office(Brandförsvaret), to which any failures should be reported.
